Folks, you are thinking too much like Americans. The painter is obviously not an American and obviously his ideology is way on the left. Theodore Roosevlet and George Custer are exceedingly poor guesses. As far as Maxim Gorky being number 80, why don’t google his image. Cheers

51 is not Michelangelo. The face looks similar but the clothing is completely outdated for Michelangelo’s time. I think 51 is Socrates and 1 is actually Aristotle (Aristotle had a shorter beard than Socrates). As for 80, it is certainly not Roosevelt or Pétain. From the neck up it does look like this famous painting of Maxim Gorky:
http://www.marxists.org/archive/gorky-maxim/gorky.jpg
But the clothing is totally off. It looked more American Civil War than Soviet to me, so I googled Custer and sure enough it’s almost identical to his Union army uniform:
http://www.old-picture.com/civil-war/pictures/General-George-Custer-001.jpg
The artist seemed to play around with this one – merging two identities into one – and it makes me wonder how many others might also be composites. Might need to go back and revisit the less obvious ones!

There was a hint in the title : 46, 48 and 49 are the authors of the painting : Dai Dudu, Li Tiezi and Zhang An, ‘discussing’ with Dante (47).
45 doesn’t look like Voltaire but is more likely the author of the ‘encyclopedie’ : Denis Diderot.
I agree with Farah for 1 being Aristotle : he is holding a paper roll, and Socrates never wrote.
